Hi View, Low Tide

Hi, Anne here – You’ll notice a difference in quality from John’s but I thought I’d add a post from our short but delicious flight.  As we rose today I felt amazingly blessed with what a lovely and unique area we get to fly with its of combination of fields, towns, hills, mountains, ocean, islands – all so visible immediately upon takeoff.

My newer point & shoot camera is substandard for the motions of the plane, but here are my favorites.  The green fields and orchards are actually the major part of this view.  This shows some of the city of Goleta and looks back toward the airport we’d just left and, at the coast, Isla Vista & UCSB, with SB in the very far distance.

The coastal tide was really Low as we flew above today and the striations in the sea floor appealed to me.  A fun surprise was seeing the reflection in Tripp’s wheel cover in the bottom right – not only the light from the low sun, but also the cowl and nose wheel of Tripp herself!

The swirls of ocean floor were so visible today:

What a delightful flight!  I’m sure John will share more of this flight in a day or two as he got some great and totally different views from his camera and side of the plane…

High Road to Stanley

I’m looking at the pix from 8/18 and am again flying solo from Smiley to Stanley and back. Here are a few more pix from that day, overflowing with Sawtooth scenes high among the mountains that will return yet again in my dreams tonight. First up, a spike of rock guarding a valley of slumbering little lakes.

Now a baby lake hiding above the dominant one that has attracted a large congregation of trees, and the attention of all the nearby peaks.

Variations in color deep in this next one makes it for me a translucent smooth gemstone set among the sharp stones.

4026 Flat Gem

I just love how clearly the patch of snow was reflected in the deep blue of a long lake that drains in a long cascade at the right. It’s diminutive companion at the left has such delicate shadings from green to blue.

4037 Peaceful Blue Lake

4037 Peaceful Blue Lake

It takes me back to a meditation I once did on the theme of a peaceful blue lake. The one I imagined was much like this, though in less rugged terrain. After a long and relaxing look at this refreshing sight, I turned toward Stanley which is reputed to be one of the coldest places in the continental U.S. (-57F record according to wiki). I decided to descend in a circle over the airport and check out the wind and the runway (running diagonally up from the bottom-right). I knew there had been recent pavement work at one end, but not whether that portion was yet open, so I decided to make my first landing on gravel.

Gravel has a lumpy bumpy surface like grass landing strips, without the cushion effect but with plenty of loose rocks to ding our beloved Tripp. Propellers in particular are vulnerable, so I took great care with all the precautions for operating aircraft on gravel and Tripp didn’t get a single nick. I met up with Anne, and we posed for this scenic shot taken by the pilot of another plane. If the jeep hadn’t been parked there, this would be one of my fav pix from the trip and perhaps my fav of Tripp. As it is, my eye invariably goes to the jeep and now I’ve probably ruined it for you too.

As with a Tibetan sand painting, that small flaw amid the grandeur is an important contribution. Shall I meditate on that, or photoshop it out for our holiday greeting card? 🙂

Smiley Rerun

Today’s review of our zillion photos from this last trip has reached our arrival at Smiley Creek, ID. Yesterday we left off with rapids as we neared Bend, OR and though we of course have plenty of pix from there they are somewhat hazy due to a big fire near Boise. Instead I’ll start off with our entrance to the Sawtooth Mountains along a pass from the West toward Stanley, ID.

3871 West of Stanley

3871 West of Stanley

Normally a scene like this would be remarkable enough to merit lots of pix, and it does show one of the two or three large light-colored peaks we saw in the area. From a distance we thought they were much taller and covered with snow or glaciers. I even double-checked my route, because the aeronautical charts didn’t show any really tall mountains there. But in this same area were some stunning alpine lakes.

3880 Alpine Lakes

3880 Alpine Lakes

We saw innumerable pristine lakes like this, and many were clearly carved from solid rock by glaciers. Though the smoke diminished quite a bit as we flew East along the pass, by now on both sides were massive rows upon rows of jagged peaks extending into the hazy distance.

3884 Sawtooth Mountains

3884 Sawtooth Mountains

I was quite happy to follow roads through wide valleys, though many pilots explore deep into these vast mountain ranges. Many of the peaks are extremely jagged, as you can see in this snap of Anne’s.

After we turned South along the valley from Stanley to Smiley Creek enjoying breathtaking vast vistas that pics don’t show well due to haze and low sun angle, Anne snapped this as I lined up for my first grass strip landing.

0718 First Grass

0718 First Grass

Along with a nice view back up the valley, it shows how well-tended this strip is. Tripp loved landing on the grass, because it’s like a giant pillow. It makes landings very gentle and smooth, eliminating any trace of that “chirp” of tires meeting pavement as they scuff away expensive rubber getting up to speed, and the soft turf quickly slows the plane without using brakes. Such a delightful airport this is! Just a few steps across the highway is the store, restaurant & coffee shop, ice cream parlor, campsite, and the heated teepee we would enjoy that night.

The Rest

We’ve found a wifi cafe, so I’m going to post the rest of yesterday’s pix and then we’re off to Renton (Seattle). We had a great rest last night, probably my best sleep of the trip so far. We’d been warned that Chelan can be populated with rowdy drunks on weekends, but it seems quiet and friendly so far. The airport’s out of town so it was really quiet. The airport guy loaned us his old klunker and we drove in last nite too.

Our first stop out of Smiley yesterday was Cascade for nitrogen in Tripp’s nose strut that had gone low. The guys at Arnold’s were fabulous, and by the time we left Tripp had her head held high and was feeling frisky. It was fun to see aerophile cows right next to the runway. They stood right next to the fence to watch the planes come and go.

The town is next to a big lake, and taking off I spotted some cool rapids people seem to use a lot. Maybe kids having a Friday lunch ride before school starts?

4172 Rapid Loop

Next we grabbed lunch in McCall, and I snapped this from over the airport after we’d done a wide climbing turn over the lake.

Next a fuel stop in nearby Council, where the airport is a quiet and lonely place amid hay fields. With the somewhat short runway, mid-day heat, and full tanks, I let Tripp take her time climbing out over open fields where I snapped this meandering cool creek.

Somewhere on the way North up the valley, a thoughtful farmer had honored our Anne with a large hillside monogram.

The river valley has lots of rapids punctuating the deep meanders and sandy beaches, and tho I saw some kayakers and rafters the pix eluded me.

4252 River Beach

We turned Northwest as the river did and then left it as we bent away from our route to see Moses Lake on the way here. As usual flying fairly low over farm country, the fields and terrain are enchanting.

4282 Terrain Tales

4282 Terrain Tales

I was admiring Lewiston when Anne commented that Clarkston is across the river, and that added to my imagining of the Corps of Discovery passing thru a few years ago when Tripp passing across the sky would have triggered considerable awe rather than perhaps a passing glance.

4293 L&C Together Again

4293 L&C Together Again

Further along I became fascinated with dust. Everything moving left a widening trail lazily climbing into the sun, and this tractor seemed to be chasing the dust devil.

4296 Tractor & Devil

Moses Lake was rather uneventful from the air, aside from a tall fountain just above the bridge at bottom-center. The lake beyond is called Potholes so we didn’t route to that side, but it might actually be more interesting from the air. The town itself sprawls all along Moses Lake, and I guess boaters and water skiers love racing back and forth along the arc of lake that’s mostly out of view to the right.

4302 Moses Lake

You’ll notice it’s starting to get smoky. There’s a fire near Wenatchee, as you can see at the upper right.

4309 Wenatchee Fire

4309 Wenatchee Fire

When we heard about the fire, we wondered whether the smoke would be hanging over Chelan. As you can see in last nite’s pic during approach to the airport though, it’s only a thin haze here. So now, up and away again… 🙂

Sawtooth Sunrise

We woke early to watch the sunrise lighting the Sawtooth Mountains, and now I’m standing outside the lodge using their wifi and waiting for their 8am opening for some coffee to offset the 32F air out here. Meanwhile, here’s what I put together last night after discovering they have wireless.

We scored a cool teepee at the lodge across the little highway from the grass air strip. Their wifi means if we have any time off from hiking, flying, driving and all things camping… I’ll be able to sort and share some pix. This is such a great place for my first “soft field” landing!

Our dear Julie snapped this as we landed, and it was so wonderful to spot her standing there waiting for our arrival!

We flew near Crater Lake on the way here from Ashland,

passed the Three Sisters peaks approaching Bend,

3807 Three Sisters

saw miles of vicious rapids even closer to Bend,

(lots of kayaks, but we didn’t see any actually in the white water), and flew past Stanley along the Sawtooth Mountains that were clearly well-named.

3889 Sawtooth Sliver

The range is of course many miles long and this pic is just a small slice near Stanley, but it gives you an idea of how jagged the peaks are. The many alpine lakes are stunning, but smoke from fires near Boise added to the natural haze backlit by the lowering sun so I’ll just have to fly them again to try for some better pix. 🙂
