Toothless

Sometimes photos are toothless, like this one from my antique cellphone.

The sky was so magnificent, but all we had was the phone. It does give an impression, and the opalescent quality of the sky might be dimly similar to the impressionist historic paintings of smoky London.

The title of this post though, is about the fact there’s a tooth missing in my smile now. Today the dentist said it’s time to give up on trusty old number 21 (lower left, behind the “eye” tooth, 4th from the center). We’d already spent a great flying trip’s-worth of Tripp cash on it, so it took considerable convincing. When we saw the x-rays of how thoroughly the infection was eating away my jaw, we finally caved in (so to speak). I’m now one of those old geezers with gaps. Next we get to decide whether to waste even more Tripp bucks on an implant. Comments, advice and suggestions welcome. It sure would be more fun to fly, or at least spend the cash on some fancy Tripp toy. Tail strobe, flashing HID landing light, avionics upgrade, even a good part of a spiffy paint job. When our Tripp is happy, we’re happy. 🙂

Thanksgiving Eve Flight

Thanksgiving Eve we took the historian and for much of the time I held the window up high so he could take photos with his big camera.  I got just a couple of  shots ‘on the fly’ with my point&shoot, one pretty and the other playful.  I took this sunset by shooting backwards as we had just turned Tripp east for the airport:

My quick capture of this offshore oil platform in the fading light amid camera motion created the look of Lifesaver candy lights:

Ten Too Long

We realized leaving the airport this afternoon that it has been ten days since we flew. Too long! Winds were uncharacteristically from the North, so we enjoyed a slow climb out past Lake Los Carneros.

Beyond the Santa Ynez valley, peaks were dusted with snow and at that height we bundled up against the 35 degree wind when I opened the window to snap this.

Back at the airport a few minutes later, beyond the huddled jumble of planes sunset colors were lighting the clouds over our smaller mountains as if to advertise their warmer heights.

I wonder if the planes grumble quietly amongst themselves about being tied to the ground like that when it’s so beautiful aloft.

Eyes

I really enjoy Anne’s photographic eye. Not just because it gives me a window into her soul by letting me see what she notices, but because she opens my eyes to new ways of looking.

On the beach where she walked during my dental appointment is the Coral Casino where rich folks hang out, and it has this cool ornamental light on top. On the beach walk rail, she paused to make eye contact with a crow.

0803 Innocent Crow

This one apparently wasn’t involved with a “murder” as described in the PBS Nature episode “A Murder of Crows” (not about homicide, in case you didn’t know). Ever since watching that, we have a new fascination with crows because they’re incredibly smart and have a social life similar to humans in many ways.

Another item on the “eyes” theme today is this cool hands free flashlight/reading light we found at Costco, that’s handy for one of us to read without disturbing the other. I also used it tonight to go out and pick up a few fallen avos while keeping my hands free.

Each end has two LED light bulbs, a spotlight and a wide angle, with a push button for off, spot, wide, or both. So with both on and the beams pointed at different areas it did a good job of lighting up a wide swath of the ground so I could find any fallen avos before the skunks and critters do. Then I pointed the beams one above the other to nicely illuminate an entire aviation magazine page I was reading. We’ll probably put at least one of these in Tripp as a handy light for ground operations before/after night flights and on our “fly-camping” trips. Are we the last people to discover this useful $7 item?

Two More

I’m deleting some duplicates, and found two more to share from 11/3. The dupes build up because I shoot “rapid fire” so that at least one out of a dozen identical pix might come out ok. There’s lots of vibration and little bumps we don’t notice when flying, but the camera does. Especially in low light when the shutter is open longer, so that a point of light will move around on the sensor producing a streak or a blur. So that one ok shot is the instant when the camera has stopped moving. It helped that 11/3 was flat calm and we’d just had Tripp’s propeller balanced to minimize vibration. Anyway, I like how SB shows better in this first one than it does in the similar shot #3150 I posted earlier.

This second shot also shows downtown twinkling nicely, with the SBCC stadium glowing colorfully.
