Plum Day

Today we flew in two planes up to Plum Island not far (by air) from Boston, and I got this pic of Zubair and family in theirs.

It’s spectacularly beautiful from the air, with an intriguing mix of colors and shapes wrought by nature and the hands of humanity.

The town is picturesque too.

The bay formed by the Merrimack River mouth right next to the airport has an especially refreshing look, though the clusters of homes out on the sand bar seem vulnerable to storms.

It’s a fun airport with lots of friendly people who volunteer their time and labor to keep it in such great condition, including a fun grass runway I used for takeoff for our return flight.

I was admiring patterns made by the tide in shallow water when I noticed this boat with its outboard motor tipped up and a man wading to pull it through the mud.

We dropped all our passengers at the airport where Tripp’s sleeping, then Zubair and I flew the two planes over to the airport where his plane lives and then back together in Tripp where Anne caught this homey scene as I landed.

Now we’re all warm from the glow of the day, and “plum tuckered out.” 🙂

Keys to Happiness

Recent studies have definitively shown that happiness is independent of wealth, fame and even health. People are happiest when we love and are loved, and when we enjoy what we are doing. No surprise then, that we’re happy. 🙂

0148 Gumbo Limbo

0148 Gumbo Limbo

Yesterday we went with Bob and Georgia to a sweet little park named Gumbo Limbo after a tree featured there, and toured aquaria and conservation exhibits including sea turtle rehabilitation. They also feature a walkway through the mangrove forest with this tower providing a quiet view to the sea. That was a happy day.

1461 Plenty

1461 Plenty

Today they drove us to the Boca airport and we flew to Key West while they had a visit with the most precious great-grandsons you can imagine. We of course have hundreds of pix from the flight, and much of the Keys looks quite like the Bahamas. Similar land and water forms. But the mansions here are more grand. This one looks like plenty of home, and the sort of place that spells Happy for many people at first glance. I wonder if the people living here could possibly be happier than we.

1456 Spacious

Or this ample place. I hope they are at least as happy as we, who flew quietly past in our magic carpet that has made all of this continent our home.

1471 Marathon

1471 Marathon

This was literally a Marathon flight, because after flying over Key West we headed back up the Keys to land at Marathon. We went to the recommended Island Fish Co. restaurant for lunch while Tripp got some refreshing cool fuel and a rest.

1474 Silent Frenzy

1474 Silent Frenzy

Right from our table on the shaded deck we could throw rice and beans to the fish and initiate a silent frenzy. Those are fish along the bottom to the right corner and when they’d come up for the food some birds would swoop down only to see the fish instantly dart out of reach. Some even flashed their silver bellies at the birds as if to taunt them. Being so relaxed, at first I didn’t see the “L” in this name of a fishing charter company.

Back at the airport Anne rearranged some things in Tripp while I did a ten minute tour of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) chapter 1241 aviation museum. Avery proudly showed their prize plane, this 1930s twin very like the one I snapped when we waited for takeoff Tuesday.

Then we flew back for another night with Bob & Georgia, snapping out both windows the whole way. Another mansion on a grand estate stood out to me. It even seems to have its own grounded freighter to protect it from the storms. Are these people happy?

1549 Happiness?

1549 Happiness?

I can tell you that we’ve been very happy nearly every minute of this marvelous “Islander Adventure” and most of that is within and between us. Yet somehow it is augmented by scenes and contemplations as we drift by glimpses of other lives.

When we landed again it was minutes ahead of an approaching thunderstorm at Palm County (KLNA) where Tripp has a cozy but less expensive spot to rest. It’s right next to Lake Worth which was once home to some of my ancestors, so taking a taxi through downtown was a bit magical. Tomorrow we’ll take the train into Miami, which we passed not long before that landing this evening.

Fire & Ice

The relatively short “dogleg” of our AB Joy return flight from Banff to Invermere provided some contrasts. First, in the clearer air where it had recently rained the remains of a glacier beckoned in the distance. I was tempted to divert a little closer when this scene came into view.

When we were closer as we passed, I snapped a two-pic closeup with zoom to study the interplay of ice and stone.

Later as smoke was once again building in the air I caught this mixture of mountains, ribbons of rain, and streams of sunlight that creates a matrix still refreshing for me all these miles and moments later.

As we rounded a sharp bend in the valley, suddenly it was apparent why the smoke had been increasing. This fresh fire was still burning unperturbed, though I’d heard another pilot radio in a report on it.

We landed for a rest at Invermere, and invested considerable time trying to decide whether to look for a room there or fly more miles over this now familiar territory toward the border before dark. As you may recall from my first post about this day, we did decide to continue. Just as I went out to fuel Tripp and get ready, one of the several helicopters parked there took off to head back toward the fire.

2955 Dangerous Mission

2955 Dangerous Mission

Now maybe it’s my age, but even though I greatly respect and appreciate the pilots who do it, the idea of flying low over a fire in a helicopter holds no appeal. An aside: Being a 172Q, Tripp is the perfect plane for our mission: happy to fly relatively low and slow but still able to go over 140mph when you want or need to; ability to carry lots of gear, fuel, and four real adults; relatively inexpensive to own and operate (about 2x our car); great view of the planet; extremely safe, simple, and easy to fly; reliable and easy to repair aided by the fact that every aircraft mechanic has worked on them and parts are plentiful; and a great umbrella on the ground for shade and shelter. All that said, the one aircraft I’d love to own is a helicopter. Not because it’s pretty much the opposite in all those categories, but because it can fly even lower and slower plus hover and (with inflatable pontoons) land most anywhere there’s a small clearing or pond. But unlike Tripp, you can’t ever fully relax and enjoy the view.

So in the next post I’ll share more pix from this magical and relaxing voyage. 🙂

Vertical Therapy

As I mentioned before, flying has a powerful soothing and healing effect for us. Any mood before takeoff magically transforms into a calm, happy, relaxed and generally blissed out state after we land. So we were scared a week ago. That’s when Tripp went in for her thorough annual checkup. It can be very expensive to ensure she remains safe and sound, especially when we add all the upgrades on our wish list. But the big scary issue is that it can keep us grounded for a long time while she’s all opened up. Last year: two months! So in the days before, we took several short flights to store up our bliss.

0898 Bliss Accumulation

The pic above is UCSB’s Campus Point from our last flight before work started, using the excuse of warming up the engine for one of the tests. I mean, why sit on the tarmac with engine roaring and brakes set when you can be flying instead, right? Well, I’m very happy to report that Tripp sailed thru her checkup with flying colors and we took some short flights to celebrate. 🙂

0922 UCSB Greeting

0922 UCSB Greeting

As if to bracket our fear of grounding, UCSB both comforted our last takeoff before work started and our first takeoff after it was completed. So now we’re confident Tripp’s tip top for another year, and her excellent report card saved us enough money to fly more. Today we flew again, tomorrow looks good, we’re looking for a Tuesday excuse, and we might fly past the July 4th fireworks Wednesday. Lifting off today before we turned toward the East I snapped this familiar view of Goleta Beach, opposite the view of Campus Point a week ago.
