Flying the Fireworks!

At past fireworks displays we’ve seen, I noticed plane(s) circling and wondered what it would look like from up there. So this year, with Tripp tied to the ground looking frisky out at SBA, we decided to check out the show from above.

7682 Wow!

7682 Wow!

The first one we saw evoked a gasp! How truly magnificent it was from the air! Even though we were 1/2 mile away it was crisp and breathtaking. Something about slowly circling them gave a special “3D” quality to the display. Plus we were above all the smoke that usually dims the show from the ground. The only thing missing was the “Oooh” from the watching crowd, but we did see a surging flicker of camera flashes all during the show for miles in every direction. In the one above, you can see lights of Stearn’s Wharf on the left and harbor on the right, and light reflecting on the sands of West Beach. Note that some of these are much larger than the version displayed with this text, so if there’s one you like you can click on it.

Because we were above the smoke, colors were especially brilliant and the light reflecting from the white sands of West Beach amplified the effect.

The smoke was gently wafting out over the water, so when we were flying over the water the smoke showed up more as backlit foreground. After some high bursts, lower ones would be partially in smoke and this one created a pink floral arrangement effect.

We enjoyed the fluffy white ones, and the way the starbust accented it. I also like how this snap caught the canons firing more.

I like how the sand bar mingles with the reflected green in this one, and how the wharf joins beach and harbor to frame the next against the inky black water.

Timing is everything. As the blue was just fading, the red burst and all but wiped out the brilliant blue that still remained.

The smoke from the previous firework blooms anew in blue as the next burst lights it from close by.

There’s a curtain of red trailing to the beach below this one.

Another plane joined us at the end, so we went further out to give them a spot closer to the show. Just as the spectacular finale began we went behind the smoke, but this shot of the start captures some of the intensity. Wish these photos could begin to convey how amazing this was! I wonder if watching fireworks in any other way will ever be the same.

Guess

Take a look at this photo from 7/4/06 and try to guess what we’re thinking about doing tonight. Hint, click on the pic to see the largest version, and take note of the area to the right of the white firework burst.

In case you’re wondering, this was taken from the SBCC East Campus overlook that had been recently spiffed up. We’d gone there several years before, and even then a small crowd was taking advantage of that vantage point.

Dad’s Visit

Our flight to and from San Diego to pick up Dad for a visit was Plan B. We’d meant to fly him up to Lake Isabella, but the ferocious winds there nixed that. We did fly him to Santa Ynez to pick up our car, parked there in case of fog at SBA when we got home from getting him in SD. I flew home while they drove the somewhat dangerous Hwy. 154.

I worried about them on Hwy. 154, and they worried about me driving home from SBA in our old mini-pickup that’s not equipped with airbags.

Once we all arrived safe back home and had a delicious homemade pizza dinner, we went for a sunset stroll and were surprised at the sudden change in weather. It had dawned foggy with low clouds that cleared in the afternoon for our flight. Now clouds were forming out of thin air over Cathedral Oaks, and it would have made for an entertaining time lapse video.

Looking back toward Hope Ranch, we could see the solid layer pouring over the mesa there and eerily mingling with the darkening trees.

By now we were in a somewhat magical mood, and stood for several minutes watching some quail on a rooftop. Amazing that they stood so perfectly still. Were they freezing in place to be invisible because we were watching them?

As you might be able to easily see from this zoomed photo, they were some sort of roof fixtures. In the dim light at a distance, we enjoyed them as canyon wildlife. Until I snapped this and we looked at it zoomed on the camera display.

Quiet At Home

We enjoyed a quiet Sunday, puttering around the house and entertaining a friend. That fits the quiet mood of some pix from Friday’s flight to Lompoc. According to a comment on my first Edhat post from the flight, the Knapp’s “castle” ruin now has caretakers. I imagine the silence up there must be powerful. Especially at night, when the coyotes aren’t singing and you can hear every little sound of nature around you, looking over sleepy Paradise Valley to the Sierra Madre beneath silent stars beyond.

There’s a different sort of quiet around the mansion at Michael Jackson’s former Neverland Ranch. It had been unkempt after he moved out, but since his passing it has been restored. The massive oaks stand quietly as if contemplating the people and activities from past times. There’s something so forlorn to me about this place, and it will be interesting to see what will happen there next. See our photo page for other aerials, including the train depot, zoo and rides.

Another study in celebrity retreats we “visited” again was Brad Pitt’s place on the beach near El Capitan. I wonder if he visits there or will sell now that he’s mostly in New Orleans, and what the white open tent is used for (and how it has survived the freaky ferocious winds we’ve had this year!). I imagine him sitting with loved ones quietly sipping some cool drink and listening to the waves lapping on his beach.

As we tied Tripp’s tail to the ground back at her home airport, we heard a bumblebee busily browsing little yellow flowers. Darting so quickly even this 1/800 second exposure is blurred, it still evoked a lazy summer mood in us.

6607 Browsing Bee

6607 Browsing Bee

Perhaps our languid flight, glimpses of quiet homes, and the enchanting weaving of the bee all fit somehow with the quiet mood of our holiday weekend. Shall we go untie Tripp today and have a new adventure?

Young & Old

We flew to Lompoc today, and at the airport a man was trying to find someone willing to show his son an airplane. We of course gave them a Tripp tour, and it was heartwarming to see dad’s patience and the youthful excitement. Dad was excited too, and walked over to Above All to see about learning to fly.

Before heading for Lompoc we flew over iMadonnari at Mission Santa Barbara to check the progress, and it was quite a contrast with yesterday. Many of the chalk art projects are nearing completion, and the place is alive with people.

Tomorrow if we don’t fly I’ll post more pix and tales from today, but for now I’m going to rest and relax in the warm glow of slow flight over scenic wonders.
