Sometimes we’re so absorbed in looking at what’s on our side of the plane, we don’t notice what each other are looking at. Of course, I’m also flying the plane so it’s more often that Anne’s enjoying something and I don’t find out about it until looking at her pix back on the ground. On a recent flight she was captivated by bare trees and their shadows, and since I couldn’t coax her to post one of her snaps here’s my fav of the set.

I like how she caught sunlight in the creek, how the road winds across it, and a powerful illusion that the trees are grazing along the grassy terrain in a slow moving herd.

Rainbow Banners

After taking care of overdue errands like smog testing our car for its registration, and finding some fun stuff at a seldom visited local home improvement shop, today we drove down “altered” State Street.  One of the fun things on this endlessly magical street are the rotating Banners, always highlighting some new event or organization.  Often it takes awhile to find out what they are representing, and many disappear within a couple of weeks, never revealing their hidden secrets.   Today’s version is reminiscent of the Chromatic Colors sculpture across from East Beach.  We have yet to discover what these particular banners are doing on State St now, but once we do I’ll update the blog.  I like how these bright rainbow colors contrast with the dark Black:

Two in a Row

After such a rainy month, we delighted to see clear skies, and treated ourselves to flying two days in a row.  John explained our transponder problem, so Monday we took a quick 15 minutes to check it out.  ATC sent us out over the ocean, so we flew higher and got different views than usual of shore.  I like the clouds sitting in stacks on the mountains:

Tuesday we settled on our preferred plan to replace the transponder and headed to San Luis Obispo to purchase and get it installed. On our way I got the snowy background of the Sierra Madres, beyond Cachuma Lake.

The sun was setting on our flight home, so soft pink skies and twinkling lights through the green Santa Ynez valley accompanied our flight, made even more pleasant with our new transponder.  I dreamily enjoyed the shimmering SY valley, the ocean view as we came over the mountain, and approaching the city lights of SB.  I felt, as I so often have, so very lucky!  And grateful & inspired that John pursued his dream of flying, and went through the rigors of getting a pilot’s license. I’m glad his dream included flying with me too!

San Diego

Christmas in San Diego this year brought unusual flights both ways, and this spectacular sunset welcomed us upon arriving on the 23rd…

The next day was the sunniest of the month, so we took advantage of clear flying weather  and took a jaunt.  This is what I recall being called ‘the jetty’.  It separates Mission Beach on the right, and Ocean Beach (OB) on the left.  I’ve stood (and swum) on both sides of this, not ever imagining I’d be flying over it in this way! I like the straight and curvy shapes in this view.

Rainbow Delight

California is inundated with rain!   We’ve been watching weather studiously of late in anticipation of our flight to San Diego on Thursday for Christmas. We look at aviation websites, Weather Underground, news reports…and one of our best guides is right outside our living room window.  From the comfort of home we can view the glorious hills, the fog that rolls over them.  The clouds have disappeared the larger mountains of late, with just tips peeking out from time to time.  However, this afternoon John’s watchful pilot eye spotted a treat.  I took this from the front porch, and did not enhance the colors at all.   It was brilliant.  We accept this as Mother Nature’s invitation for a delightful flight tomorrow!
