Smoke Signal Adventure

Anne’s “Flying Home” post introduced our first Big Adventure since “Islander” in three years, when we flew the Bahamas. This new one I’m calling the “Smoke Signal” Adventure was familiar after so many flights since 2006 and part of that is how unique each Adventure is, including discoveries of new expressions like this on the face of our planet.

It had grown increasingly surprising to us that it’s been so long, but suddenly something powerful got us moving and we took off. Unlike earlier Adventures we hesitated for many months trying to decide whether to go. Part of the problem is smoke, like this uncorrected view toward the West from the Sacramento area where the above corrected beauty was taken.

1522 Sac Smoke

Our part of the world is declared to be in Exceptional Drought, and around here that means wildfires like the local Rey, Sherpa, and countless other big fires around CA. The smoke from all that burning makes flying more complicated and less fun. But it’s still fun to look more straight down and away from the sun because our brains correct for the smoke to present interesting things like this.

Just off the bottom of the pic are a waste water treatment plant and a prison. All we noticed in flight was the airport tempting us to land, but looking at full-resolution pix to discover the adjoining facilities adds a note of curiosity about what it would’ve been like. Nearby this bright feature triggered a shutter press.

1527 Painted Pond

1527 Painted Pond

We wondered what “painted” the pond that beautiful turquoise, and now pondering in detail we’re guessing it’s used for boat races. There are shelters where fans can watch, and a swimming pool next to a smaller pond where people can cool off.

Sometimes a feature we’ve snapped remains enigmatic until we’ve not only examined the pix in detail but googled it. This one that looks like an outdoor theater for boaters defied all attempts for an hour. It’s on the Sacramento River Bike Trail next to the freeway, but gMaps only identified the Bill Conlin Sports Complex across the small street at the left. Finally I decided it’s a fresh water facility and found out it’s the Freeport Water Intake in the Sac burb of Meadowview.

In case you’re still not clear about that powerful “something” that finally got us flying toward the North, it’s partly detailed in Anne’s post and in this pic. To me that’s a heart-shaped grove of trees next to the river.

Flying Home – via Shasta & ClearLake

We’re back from wonderful visits on our latest journey to Okotoks Canada (& precious 5yr old grandaughter!), Glacier Park MT, Seattle, Grants Pass – with delightful family & friends.   We flew home today along Shasta Lake,

and the ever-intriguing wetland shapes from aerial perspective.

So glad we went on our wonderful trip visiting lovely people – and so happy to be home!  More photos to come…once we settle in to our happy home 🙂

SBA High

Usually at SBA we’re low, either taking off or landing. So there higher views are a nice change.

It was great having a brief break from the smoke, which happily was hanging in that thick layer far to the West. Looking back toward the North, our hills were fairly clear too.

All the brown grass patches and the lack of green in the chaparral are pretty scary though, especially with the Rey Fire burning just on the other side of this “front range” of Santa Ynez Mountains. Looking to the northwest you could see the thinner layer of smoke from there, that had managed to slip over the pass and cling to the shoulders of our mountains.

We still love flying here, but are dearly hoping this Winter brings at least normal rainfall so we can see more green and waterfalls again.

Casitas to Coast

Coming back from a look at the Pine Fire burn area we enjoyed this first look at Lake Casitas in the distance made hazy by the cool coastal humidity.

9961 Cool Coast

9961 Cool Coast

One of the things that made it especially inviting was the much hotter air over the burn area. Another thing I like about this pic is how it shows the relative shoreline size. The full lake outline goes from the bottom-left off the right end. Closer in we could begin to get an idea of how much the vertical lake level has dropped from the drought.

I also saw again the tiny airstrip just above the dark pond at bottom-left that we’ve seen there on prior flights. Here’s the closer look I’ve been meaning to get for several years now, because we descended just to check it out and snap this.

9976 Plane Truth

9976 Plane Truth

I’d seen the “X” marks at the runway ends before, and thought maybe it was some rancher’s private airport for a “short field” plane. But in fact, it’s home to the Ventura County Comets Radio Control Flying Club, that used to launch “seaplanes” right next to the runway at lake level. For their planes, that airstrip is enormous! We went on for a look at the first of many marina slips next to the concrete boat launch ramp that now ends well above water level.

9966 Low Water

I like the different shapes, textures and colors in that pic. Next we came across the hills above Rincon, where I noticed these rows of buildings.

9997 Trees & Buildings

9997 Trees & Buildings

Among the wild trees, geometric orchards and patches of bare earth, the neat rows of long buildings tickled our curiosity. So we snapped this maximum zoom shot, and I’m reminded of a childhood memory.

9989 Little Chicken

9989 Little Chicken

My first look at a chicken ranch years ago makes me think that’s what this is, only this one looks much more humane and smaller.

Battling Doom

This pic from 6/17 is striking to me. The sky is so overwhelmingly ominous with layers of smoke from the Sherpa Fire! Yet the DC-10 tanker is heading into the mouth of the dragon to drop fire retardant.
