Right Seat

I have some photos today.  This one of the point at UCSB was taken on 6-20 as we flew – John’s Father’s Day choice 🙂 – up the coast.  The context for the first two was “UCSB without Molly” – the campus looks different with her in Paris.  I appreciate how much more connected I feel to the campus from her having been here, and even more so with the graduation activities. Got a closer sense of the warm community life in IV as well.  So here is the Campus Point with students enjoying the beach:

Then this from the same flight, on the return.  I loved the clouds along the edge of the coast, and especially this view with the sliver of mountain top peeking through.  This looks toward Vandenburg from the valley between Lompoc and Buellton.

John’s encouraged me to post – thank you John!

Home Is

Someone seems to be building a home on a hillside with magnificent views of the mountains just up from the shoreline we were flying near when I snapped this. It’s not far from Santa Barbara, so one wonders how expensive the property might be.

The line of trees will grow into a nice wind break. It seems possible though, that additional factors may have motivated the tree planting. To cite the realtor mantra: location, location, location.

In this wider view, you can see how the line of trees relates to the neigborhood.

A bit closer to town is this modern hacienda ranch that seems to be centered around equestrian activities, though I only notice two horses in this photo.

Nearby another pair of structures could be part home and part stables. Though the roofs are different colors, together the two adjoining building outlines seem to spell out a greeting to pilots.

Dads Pass?

If you were a CHP officer flying over traffic or sitting in a patrol car on Father’s Day, would you let speeding Dads off with a warning or perhaps come down a bit harder because you’d rather be home with your family?

Carp and Back

Just half an hour of “engine time” this evening gave us almost an hour of transformative flying. We cruised slowly along the 101 toward Carpinteria, then climbed offshore for a look at the oil platforms. For some reason it’s been quite a while since we looked at them. Usually we’re over the water along the shoreline, or climbing much higher going over to the islands.

The shimmering seas remind me of that old TV series “Victory At Sea.”

Then we climbed over Carp toward the Santa Ynez range, deciding whether to cruise West up the valley.

A glance at the haze helped us choose a gliding descent back toward the Santa Barbara Harbor. At about Butterfly Beach or so I snapped the surf lineup waiting for the next set.

I like how the sand has been stirred into dirty puffs by the larger waves they’re waiting to ride. Sometimes clouds over the Salton Sea look like this, as if this were a view of the sky.

A Walk

I’m hoping Anne will start making more posts to our blog, but meanwhile I wanted to share some pix she took yesterday. While I was at our dentist on Coast Village, she walked to the Biltmore and along some of Butterfly Beach. It’s always fun for me to see how other people see, and her perspective in particular is of course fascinating to me. For example, I like how she snapped just one wing and the shadow of a bird (heron?) in this beach view.

I cropped this from her larger frame that included a few diaphanous clouds, in order to accent the bird. Such a beautiful town to live in with such a beautiful person, eh?

She also snapped several studies of this floral collection, and this one isn’t cropped though I did compensate somewhat for her compact camera.

I like how she features the yellow, yet includes the tiny white and blue flowers once you’re drawn in. As you may have noticed, pix from her camera are at a different numbering sequence (e.g. 0984 vs 7090 on my camera) though yesterday’s ground-level Courthouse snap was my idea on her camera. If you like her work, please consider posting a comment and/or using our Contact link near the upper right of every page. A little encouragement might get her snapping and posting more often. 🙂
