Flower Flight

After years of epic drought our mountains have recently been kissed by a few good rains, and what looked completely dead a couple of months ago is now blushing with color.

The hills West of Figueroa Mountain at the northern edge of Santa Ynez Valley looked promising as we approached. Here’s what we saw closer to that far slice of poppies on the slope of the top-right pic above.

Other years before the drought we’d sometimes see lupines so thick they painted the hills brilliant shades of blue. Still, this is the first time they’ve been thick enough to show blue hints from the air as they frolic in the sun alongside poppies dazzling the wizened oaks.

In case you’d like to try finding these patches on the dirt roads, here’s come context looking East toward Figueroa Mountain.

Nearby we also passed what’s left of the late Michael Jackson’s fanciful Neverland Ranch. The name is still tended in flowers and butterflies between foundations of two amusement rides that had been there some years ago. The train tracks bottom-left bring back an impression of the whimsical place he built.

The iconic train station near the mansions and lake is looking even better, helped by the brilliant green brought forth by the rain. Does the lonely sound of a steam engine whistle ever echo across the narrow valley between these two floral displays?

Interplay

The interplay of air, land and water is so magnificent to me. Perhaps it’s a reflection of the relationships among people? Yesterday sitting mostly in awed silence shoulder to shoulder in Tripp we meandered down the coast to Carp and the Salt Marsh seemed to shimmer in that interplay.

A few breathtaking dreamscapes later we chanced to catch this surfer ripping a Rincon wave. The splash hung in a shining bubble, then transformed to a blast of misty spray and fell back into the boundless sea after a moment in the sun.

We ♥ SB

Santa Barbara was overflowing with couples on Valentine’s Day. But some were probably enjoying the President’s Day holiday, and others were just out relishing the crisp blue skies and incredibly warm weather. We toured the town having decided not to fly, then as evening approached the sweet song of a quietly passing plane caught our ear. The only decision was how short to make the flight, given that we had a movie date with friends. It ended up being 17 minutes in the heavenly air.

Every beach along our coast was alive with people at play. Though it’s impossible to tell from the quarter mile above where we fly, presumably many of them were couples celebrating their love in the ways they most enjoy together. We sure were! 🙂

Could those be two couples kissed by sea foam on a quiet stretch of beach beneath carved sandstone cliffs? We saw people at Ellings Park and the Wilcox (Douglas Family Preserve), and Hendry’s (Arroyo Burro) Beach. Whether on the ground, in the water, or best of all aloft in Tripp; We Santa Barbara!

Solimar Fire & Snow

On our Saturday flight we saw these patches of snow around distant Reyes Peak, and it kindled hope for some easing of our epic drought.

Alas, between Ventura and Carp we also saw a stark reminder that the drought isn’t over yet, in the form of the Solimar Fire.

The little community there narrowly escaped the flames as you can see in this next pic.

With the strong winds, the fire jumped Hwy.101 and the railroad tracks but crews managed to stop it at the old Pacific Coast Highway just short of the homes. Up in the hills we saw bright red PhosChek laid down in lines to stop the fire from moving East toward Ventura.

The fire seems to have respected their red lines, but it must have been quite a battle as embers filled the air and landed on bone dry scrub brush. The hills are so dry it’s not always easy to tell from the air where the burned areas are. We also happened to spot this helicopter dropping water on a hot spot as crews watched from a safe distance.

Delight

Delight is best when shared I find. Maybe the delight of this dance recital performer can brighten your day as it has ours.

We can’t keep from grinning every time we look at her. Pure delight! 🙂
