High Life

One of the many highlights today was a stroll on the High Line Park near the Hudson. It’s a wonder of community collaboration integrating humanistic and creative design with public art installations. At times you feel as if walking in one of those artist’s conceptions of an architecture proposal.

It boasts a wide variety of small environments from these lounge chairs to a small stadium, covered areas, benches, walking paths, gardens, old rail lines sprouting flowers and trees, and more. It also provides a wide variety of great views to other parts of the city.

The mood is enchanting. Much quieter than the street below, and people of all ages and cultures are mingling in relaxed conversation or serene solitude. We could see a long stretch nearing completion to the North, so we have yet another reason to go back on our next NYC visit.

And Again!

Well, after more great times with great friends we flew NYC together again. Hazier today, with thin high clouds, so the light was diffused with different color and less shadow than yesterday evening. We had intended to fly the Hudson to Lady Lib, then turn left up the East River to go up and back the shorter corridor there. Yankees had a different plan, that first required us to divert to the right beyond the Hudson into Jersey around the restricted airspace near the stadium. That gave us unusual and unexpected views like this one across the Hudson with the whole city in context. Remember you can click on nearly any of our pix on this blog to see at least slightly larger and sharper versions.

We got a good look at the Brooklyn Bridge in today’s light, and it reinforced our desire to walk or bike it.

The game’s restricted area completely prevented us flying the East River at all though, so we just circled the Lady and changed plan.

That circling also gave us a great look at Ellis Island, and we all imagined immigrants having endured a long sea voyage that was the first time at sea for most. This beacon of hope greeted them just before they stepped ashore on the bustling and probably terrifying, intimidating, humiliating or overwhelming Ellis Island.

We decided to head for Montauk on the tip of Long Island, and I got clearance to fly low just offshore below the busy JFK airspace. Looking back as we passed the Verrazano Bridge, Manhattan was already fading into the distance.

That brought us a great view of Coney Island, and we imagined how different it would look on a hot weekend in just a few weeks.

Climbing higher along the island we saw some remarkable mansions in the Hamptons.

We also enjoyed some spectacular vistas nearing the end of the island.

We landed in gusty direct crosswinds that changed dramatically just before touchdown due to the dunes and tall scrub (fun for the pilot, yet smooth for my passengers). You can see the runway on the left edge of the pic below. After a tasty light dinner (left of the harbor entrance below) with a ride provided by the sweet lady managing the airport, we made a leisurely 40 minute flight back to White Plains.

Another day that feels like a week of precious memories.

I Heart NY

Having now landed in every state except Hawaii and (surprisingly given how close it is to SB) Colorado, one of our favorite scenic flights is along the Hudson River past New York’s stunning Manhattan skyline. We got better photos today, flying with the same two precious friends as last time when it was later in the day and hazier. I don’t seem to have words, but luckily I have a few pix to share. Hope you enjoy viewing them as we did actually being there, and maybe I’ll get around to posting larger versions on the Photo Page if we get a spare few minutes. sigh…

New Haven

We’ve found a new haven in CT with fun people. Our train ride from DC back to rise above it all in Tripp, provided some time for me to futz with my broken camera. Turned out it was near-sighted. Anything up to about 25 feet away would focus, but not further. Somehow I figured out that removing a thin brass washer behind the main lens fixed it!

So above is my first pic after the “repair” and it looks pretty good at full res, except for the fact it was dark overcast and very smoggy. So one of your eyes over our route is restored, just in time for more aerial adventures. Anne’s camera still works, though it has shortcomings of its own. Anyway, today’s flight took us past NYC on a different route than we’ve flown before. Even in the overcast and thick smog it looked pretty cool.

Another cool thing about today’s flight was going directly over JFK, easily the busiest airport we’ve ever done that at.

Tripp’s spiffy new “pants” (wheel fairings) looked crisp and easy above the smoggy and crowded airport. The controllers were quite helpful in sparing us a long detour around this major hub on our way up the coast. We’re excited to have the day here tomorrow with dear friends, and then to head back and explore NYC with dear friends. It’s great to be flying again!

Constitution

Today we saw many of the papers associated with the drafting of the U.S. Constitution, and most of Thomas Jefferson’s personal library that helped shape much of the thinking behind that famous document. But the title of this post is also about the state of my mind and body. My personal constitution does not seem to be fully up to a perfect union. My feet are blistered, I’m scuffed and scraped and sore all over. Having slept in a different hotel for three nights in a row, and different states many times along our path thus far, my mind is getting fuzzy. We began today’s touring with a Capital Bikeshare ride to the Smithsonian “castle.”

The other time we were here, it was closed so we didn’t get to look inside. Even tho it’s an information center with some interactive exhibits for kids, I was curious about the interior design. Though nice it’s not up to the look of the outside, but now I know. And I still love these fanciful brick buildings. 🙂

Then over to the awesome original Library of Congress building, built under budget and over specification with exceptional artistry added by the artisans who wanted to leave their mark on history.

The two guys are reading by the light of torches symbolizing knowledge, one young learning for career and the other old learning for the pure joy of it. “Adult Ed,” I said to Anne, pointing at the old dude. “Lifelong Learning,” she replied gesturing at the pair.

After an inspiring tour and our own wander, we walked over to the home of the Supremes, and mingled with visitors from around the world, looking at yet more magnificent stone carving and taking photos of each other.

Then back on the bikes for a glorious ride to the Jefferson Memorial, which unlike this photo was quite sharp and clear.

8554 Fuzzy Jefferson

Our memories of the remains of the day are sharp, as are pix on Anne’s camera, but this is after I dropped mine and found it doesn’t focus distant anymore. We visited the Vietnam Wall after dark, passed the White House one last time, then back to our latest hotel to prepare for a flight (hopefully) to New Haven, CT. Flying and our destination will both do much to restore my constitution. 🙂
