A Camera

Today we only took Anne’s little red camera. It was nice having no backpack on our long day, and it started at the colorful Nyack farmers market with Enid.

I think of them as outdoors like Santa Barbara, but here it’s in this cozy building with nice music. A’s camera then rode with us to Bob’s workplace in Manhattan and walked to the P.O. across from Madison Square Garden.

Yes, that’s my head wearing a cheapo toque we bought on a prior adventure (it was cold!). You’re beginning to see the theme: A’s camera looking at me while I’m looking at our Places of the day. Next of course was inside the PO where we felt transported back a millennium to a time when all correspondence was on paper like this missive to May.

Then to save time getting across town we took the subway. It was an adventure in many ways, but being newbies we would actually have taken about the same time and had more fun just walking the thriving street to get across town.

With the clatter of noisy trains, other sounds were drowned out but we appreciated the effort these musicians were making. At last we reached the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This place will richly reward several full days of exploration by art lovers. As you’ve guessed, we were there for a somewhat shorter visit. Maybe a bit over half an hour, much of which we invested on Tara’s suggested Street. It’s a sloMo shift into the dance of city streets accompanied by enchanting guitar. By the time we were back outside, we’d learned to momentarily switch the sights and sounds into sloMo. Our walk thru Central Park was especially magical.

Later when we passed Radio City Music Hall where there was a monster media sports draft event going on, the psyche was still permeable and the deafening din barely concealed a substrate of total silence with a hint of guitar.

I confess that even before viewing the art film Street at the museum, my head was occasionally back in yesterday’s air over the city.

Again With Feeling

We flew NYC again today, with more good feelings.

This time we took god-daughter Tara, who lives in and loves NYC, and her enjoyment increased our feelings of fun and delight.

Again we were cleared to cross Central Park, and this time I managed to capture an angle I like even tho it was pretty hazy compared with last time.

In a way the haze makes it more real than those rare crystal clear days, giving depth and complexity to what is a truly thrilling view of this fabulous city.

Shift

I noticed a shift in the city today. My first visit to NYC was thrilling, scary, and overwhelming. The second time I fell in love with the teeming Life and the intense diverse culture, but was off balance due to a powerful impulse to see/do it all. Today the city flowed through me, and I was contentedly calm in creative chaos. We started out at the Gug.

For some reason the Men In Black movie chase scene up that spiral ramp fit perfectly with the water and poly tube art installation. Enid was the perfect intelligent and playful companion for the art we strolled here, as with the entire day we unfolded together.

We walked most of the length of Central Park, and a highlight was the explosion of color in the Shakespeare Garden. We paused at Belvedere Castle to enjoy a serene view of the tumult all around the park.

We ended at Times Square as dusk settled and the mood of this delightful beast shifted to Night.

East & Beyond

It Has Happened. After several failed attempts, I have flown the NYC East River route. Well, not failed flights. These prior attempts didn’t happen because of FAA restrictions for VIPs or ballgames at Yankee Stadium, and due to bad weather. But today the weather was ok (not good), and the FAA smiled on me Big Time. So after again flying the wonderful Hudson River route to Governors Island off the southern tip of Manhattan, I heard the magic words to go “Proceed direct to the East River.” 😀

3186 Magic Turn

3186 Magic Turn

As you can see, it was more hazy than yesterday and the clouds made the photos slightly less amazing for everyone but me. I was happier than a bee in a pollen pasture. I’d been telling myself, “Oh, the East River is just another angle on Manhattan. No worries if it doesn’t happen. (I was lying to myself, as you’re well aware)

3198 Looking Back

3198 Looking Back

Looking back at the Brooklyn Bridge and Wall Street area I was sort of in disbelief. Living a dream I’ve imagined many times, and even “flown” in Google Earth a time or two. Then my first time seeing the U.N. building from the air, along with the closest view ever of two of my fav scraper “friends”: Empire State & Chrysler.

3215 U.N. & Friends

But things got a little crazy in the Good Fortune department when the controller said in code, “You’re doing well, permission granted to live the impossible dream.” Now on prior flights in this region I’ve heard other pilots routinely enjoy the treat I was about to experience. But the controllers probably know those pilots, and the pilots clearly know how to express their desire in a way that conveys their comfort with the complex airspace. So it was muy cool when the controller said Tripp was “Cleared to cross the park.” Meaning of course, Central Park!

OK, now maybe this hazy snap is ho hum for you (if not, click it to see the larger version), but for me it’s like a snapshot of nirvana. I Was Here! 😀

Maybe just as powerful is the unspoken certainty that I’ll Be Back. 😉

Best of all, I got to share this moment with Amazing Anne and our dear Bob & Enid. Plenty more pix of course, but these are my favs so far. After flying back up the Hudson out of the special route we took a detour to see their sweet Home at the base of a cliff in Nyack.

Just as every Hudson flight has loomed large in my dreams and memories, today’s flight up the East River and Beyond with four fav people will brighten the rest of my days.

Some Days

Some days are just more special than others. Sure, every day is a miracle for those who can notice. But for us today was just overwhelming.

Any day Tripp transforms with a jaunt along the Hudson River past Manhattan is a special day for us. But even better was starting the day in New Haven with Molly and Dustin, including this wander in the wonderland of trees in bloom.
